The price of New Zealand hemp is steadily increasing at Home. At the last sales fourteen bales were sold at £16 5s per ton, and 310 bales were bought in. The Melbourne Age, commenting on the proposed amalgamation of the Bank of New Zealand and the Colonial Bank, considers that, looking at what other institu tions are earning, the Colonial Bank's business is of a profitable character, and worth buying by the Bank of New Zealand. The Manawatu A. and P. Association has decided to invite members of Parliament to the show, on the 23rd and 24th inst., admission to all privileges to be free on presentation of gold passes. The Dun stan paper says a disgraceful scene took place at Alexandra when the local constable was arresting a man. He had some trouble, and consequently swore in three or four special constables. When they got their prisoner to the look-up, they went inside with him, and some of the crowd that had followed looked the door, lotking policeman, special constables, and prisoner all in together, and, of course, took away the key. They were locked up for some hours before they con d be liberated by taking the l»ok off the door. At the Christchurch Stipendiary Magistrate's Court, before Mr H. S. Wardell, S.M., the charges against Leonard Harper of having unlawfully and with intent to defraud converted to his own use certain moneys entrusted to him as agent-attorney or trustee were heard. The total atrtoutit involved is £11,626. Mr Stringer conducted the prosecution, and Mr Wilding appeared for the defence. Harper reserved his defence in each case, and was com* mitted for trial. In answer to Mr Pirani, the Premier on Friday said that every effort had been made to bring to justice those concerned in the death of a Wellington young woman at Palmerston North a short time ftgo. It had been stated that the death of the young woman had been causpd by illegal operation but the police only had the woman's statement to go on, and although every effort was made, no trade of wbo performed the operation could be obtainedi The Minister of Railways regrets that he cannot see his way to reduce the railway charges for the carriage of frozen meat. The reductions already made in the carriage of live sheep had necessitated an expenditure of £10,000 for additional rolling stock, Messrs Huddart, Parker and Company have ordered a new steamer for the intercolonial trade, larger than the Tasmania. It is understood that the repairs to the Warrimoo, which went on the rocks near Vancouver, will cost between £20,000 and £23,000. S anbury, the sculler* states that he is fully prepared to accept Harding's challenge to row for the championship of tile World, As soon as he has completed his arrangements he will cable his acceptance. He would prefer the Parramatta to the Thames, but will let nothing stand in the way of the match. If he cannot beat Harding, he says, he had better knock off rowing altogether. Mrs Fenton, formerly of the Royal Hotel at Palmerston North, died last Thursday at the age at 71 years.
