PBISONMENT.
The Hukatere murder case con-iludr-d at Wanganui at 9.30 p.m. od Thursday, after a trial of two day-». Thi^ Maori jury, after over five hoars' deliberation, returned a verdict <>f manslaughter. In sentencing the accused, Wiri Ka ihu Koroai, His Honor the Chief Justice spoke very strongly. He said that in his opinion the jury nude a grave mistake, and had returned a verdict contrary to the evidence. It was to be assumed, he said, that they believed the evidence of the accused, and disbelieved six other people. The act of the ac cu?ed, although the jury said it had been committed undor provocation, was the asc of a fiend and not of a human being. He sentenced the priioner to ten yean' hard labour.
