Notes and Events.

Sir Hercules Robinson gave a ball at Government House, Capetown, in honour of Lord and Lady Brassey, who are on their way to Victoria in their yacht, the Sunbeam. Addresses have been presented by the municipalities and by the ex-Vic-torians resident in this colony. Lord and Lady Brassey and party sailed on the 20th instant for Mel* bourne.

Messrs Thompson and party, the prospectors of No. 1 claim in the Karori Reservoir Reserve, known as Thompson's Reward Company, took a sample of fine gold to the office of the New Zealand Times on Monday morning for exhibition. The gold, which weighed about 2oz, was the result of three days' work by two men. The most primitive manner was adopted by the prospectors in extracting the gold from the rock, and consequently it may be fiafely inferred a large proportion oft- the precious metal was lost in the tiead* ings and tailings. The stone, which was taken from a tunnel near the caretaker's house, was merely roughly broken with a hammer and run through a sluice-box, and was panned off in a digger's ordinary tin dish. The prospect, which may be considered as a highly satisfactory one, has put the claimholdera in better spirits than ever. The gold was de« posited in the Bank of New Zealand** where it may be seen by the curidttl^ in such matters.

The Auckland Star* reports that Mr Richard Crabb, the well-known temperance advocate, was fined 203. and costs at the Ofcahuhu Police , Court on Wednesday for having used insulting language to William McManus, of the Star Hotel. Evidence was given by the complainant that Crabb some to the front of his hotel and used the words " You are a publican's pup ; go inside and bark from your own kennel." The -de*, fence was that there was no intent to insult the complainant. The Bench expressed regret " that a man of Mr Crabb'a popularity should have ■ so forgotten himself, and considered such words and such action of Mr Crabb's detrimental to the npbte cause of temperance." r ■ ' V '/T

In the Wellington Stipendary Magistrate's Court, two seamen belonging to the ship Oamaru were charged on Saturday with broaching cargo. The evidence showed that while committing the offence the men had lit several candles in the vicinity of 45 tons of gunpowder. Accused were remanded to enable the officers to ascertain the extent of the depredations. It has been ascertained that daring the voyage of the same ship from Lon» don the rigging was maliciously cut and this was only discovered in time to prevent a yard falling on two men below. The patent log was also seriously damaged.
