A Lady's Letter.

Wellington, Aug. 81, 1895. Thr ball on Thursday night at House wa3 much enjoyecbyby. about a hundred guests. The .decorations were as usual very artistid, and consisted of large pot plants, cftmelias and daffodils, Lady Glasgow received In a lovely white : satin gown, trained and trimmed with wreathes of forget-me-nots and epaulettes of black spangled chiffon. Lady Alice Boyle wore her "f pretty pale blue satin gown, trimmed with lace and pink roses. Lady Dorothy wore soft white muslin and lace. Among the guests were Mrs Arthur Russell, who wore smoke grey satin, handsomely trimmed with grey velvet of a darker shade ; Mrs Fulton, very handsome black brocade gown trimmed with jet and lace ; Mrs Baldwin, white satin trimmed with pearls and chiffon ; Mrs W. Moorhouse, black velvet relieved with white lace ; Miss Daniels (Wanganui), pretty white satin gown, trimmed on the bodice with sky blue ribbon and passementerie ; the Misses Williams (Hawke's Bay), wore pretty sky blue satin gown trimmed with white lace; Miss Johnston, handsome old gold brocade; her sister wore deep blue satin, slightly trimmed with folds of white chiffon ; Miss Cooper, cream ganze, the bodice was of violet velvet, veiled with gauze and further trimmed with violets ; Miss J. Cooper, white brocade i the Misses Rose wore charming gowns of white merveilleaux, trimmed with long frills of chiffon; Mrs T. W. Wilford, Mrs Williams, Mrs Empson (Wanganui), the Misses Williams (2), Grace, B tiller, Hislop, Miller, McGregor, Gibson, Fraser and others. Mr Maughan Barnett gave another Matinee last Wednesday, when, in spite of the wet weather, a large au> dienoe was present which included the Vice* Regal ." Mr Barnett was on this occasion assisted by Mr Alfred Hill and Madame Carlton, who soon made herself a favourite by her sweet and pretty singing. Lady Glasgow wore on this'decasion a neat fawn covert coating costume [With revere of black moire and pre% jefc bonnet with aigrettes. Lady Dorothy Boyle wore a dark skirt and pale blue blouse nnd sailor hat. Lord Glasgow and Captain Campbell-Preston made up the party. The billiard room looketf like some fairy bower, the huge table being transformed with pot nikau palms and fern?, among j which stood large white busts and j handsome engravings on easles, and lots of tiny fairy lamps in different Bhades, the illumination ivom these being the only light in the room. On the balUroom mantel-piece were arranged lovely pinkcaraelias, in the drawing-room primroses, and on the Bupper table violets and daffodils. Our hostess wore a handsome black velvet gown trimmed with jet and lovely old lace. Miss Willia ms wore very pretty pale pink fraille gown trimmed with roses to match ; JVliss E. Williams, cream satin and lace ; Mrs Russell, lovely cream satin and brocade gown ; Lady Alice Boyle wore white satin, trimmed with lace and white roses ; Miss Grace, very pale grey silk gown trimmed with gauze and bunches of violets ; Miss Russell wore a very becoming gown of < grey 'merveilleaux and white chiffon fichu ; the Misses Reynolds, pretty white brocade trimmed with pearl embroidery. Others present were — Mrs and the Misses Izard, Mrs Empson, Mrs Stratton -Izard, Mva^SPW. iOrawford; Mrs A. Pearce, Mrs H. D.. Bell, Mrs G. Hutchison, and the Misses Daniels, Tolhurst, Gore, v Hardiug, Miller, ' Acland, Coopevr etc. The Thorndon Fancy Fair was opened by Archbishop Redwood this afternoon, when there was a very large attendance. It is held in the DrilfcShed (which is most beautifully deoorated)^ and will be open about a weeft** f It is noted by all to be one of the best arranged bazaars given here, ... Sigju.
