District Meeting of 1.0.G.T.

The members of the various lodges in the Palmerston District held their usual quarterly meeting at Palmerston, the Rev Bro J. Bocker, D.C.L., being in the chair. Representatives, were present from nearly all th<J* lodges in the District, representing 12 lodges, with a membership of over 600, showing an increase of over 40 members. A committee was formed to arrange for a convention which will probably be held in a month or two at PaN merston. The following resolutions were? passed : — That the District Lodge appeals to the Ministers and Parliament, in view of the fact that nearly all the existing railway licenses expire at the end of this year, to enact that all such licenses shall be abolished as was proposed in the Government Bill of last session. The District; Lodge appeals to Parliament to enact that scientific temperance shall be a compulsory subject in the Publio schools syllabus. ° • This lodge approves of the four proposals to be submitted to the ; electors as provided in the Licensing Bill ; all the provisions of section 7 for taking the licensing poll on gene- . ral election day; the logical completeness of the scope given to the : district and the national no-license vote ; the very satisfactory provisions for enforcing national prohibition, the abolition of bottle and New Zealand wine license?, and the prohibition of the sale of liquor to aboriginal native women, but maintains that the only equitable arrangement for the popular option voting will be to / give every voter the option of voting for or against any one, two or three of the four proposals. That the

minimum of reduction should be tnuoh much higher than 6 per cent. That no provision should be made for any increase of the existing number of licenses* That either a bare majority, or something much leß3 r than a three-fifths vote should be required to carry either district or national prohibition, and that in the event of a national vote for restoration of licenses, a district vote should D 9 also provided for. That this District meeting urges upon all the subordinate Lodges in its jurisdiction the importance of holding open-air public meetings, and requests that whenever practicable such meetings be held monthly. / It was also proposed to hold next District meeting at Levin, and Bro Adams, Grand Chief Templar of New Zealand, be invited. It was also reported by our bush pioneer, Bro Dick, of Apiti, of a lodge being opened at Birmingham and Itangiwahia, and that the above lodges are prospering phenomenally and bid fair to be among the largest in the district. A very successful Temperance Demonstration was held in the PaX j mergton Salvation Army barracks after a torchlight procession, addresses were given by leading temperance men. The following resolution was passed:— That this meeting appeals to Parliament so to amend the Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act Amendment Bill so that (a). Either district prohibition and reduction votes shall be given for or against any one, two or three of the four proposals submitted. (b). Where reduction is carried the minimum shall be 25 per cent. (c). No increase of the present number of licenses in the colony shall be lawful. (d). It shall be unlawful to remove any license from any one site to any other. (c). Railway licenses 3hall be abolished. (f). Public houses shall be closed on election day. Secondly, That the member for the district be asked to do his utmost in the House to give these proposals effect. _______________
