Levin - Greatford Railway.
Dimtfca the Week the memorial to the Government to comply with the request of the promoters of the ex tension of the (Jarnarvon-Sanson Tramway, has been signed by residents of Levin, Foxton, Campbelltown, Sanson and Bulls. The pub lie meeting hold in Foxton has thus been fully justified and has proved that a start was only needed to show how earnest the desire still is, as it has been shown to have been in the | past, for the construction of this very necessary loop in our railway com* munication. We have watched th« agitation from its first inception, unto now, and never did the scheme look nearer accomplishment. Every thing hinges upon the astonishing ! fact whether the Government will forbear to obstruct it. Time brings i changes, but it must be a peculiar ! change when it Is possible to suppose, during a time of acknowledged difficulty to the labourer* that a proposal to carry out largo works calling for the employment of a larger amount of mu-cle than many other projects would require, that the Government of the country* loudly proclaiming themselves the protectors of th* working man should obj ct to such expeudituie being made. We can not think this can be» but are in* dined to think that probably th* Go vernment have not been mad^ aware of the feeling existent in the district, and have thus looked upon the pro popal as a pure speculation on the part of the promoters, instead of its being a gonnine attempt to supply a long-felt waat. The members of the deputation to the Government comprise some of the foremost men on this coast and the simple fact of their allowing their names to be identified in the ap proval of the request made by tbV promoters, must of itself, bear greai weight with the Government. The gentlemen are settlers of long stand ing and are therefore ready and able to reply effectively to any obj actions that may arise during the interview . We wish them God speed in th ir duties and trust if only for the sake of those so urgently needing work that their missiun may be crowned with success.
Mv Henvy Coley will start his hemp-mill on the Himatangi almost at once. Mv Tennant, at Carnarvon, who purposed closing his mill now intends to get again into full work. Now that most of our hemp mills are getting und>r weigh it would be wise for landowners to put in a good area of oats, as there always is a good demand for this fodder when flax i« at a good price.
