Supreme Court.

The Criminal sessions commenced on Monday. The Grand Jury returned Trot Bills in the following cases :— -George Draper, breaking and entering; Frank Philpot alias Woods, forgery and uttering ; William Smith, falge pretences ; Martha Richards, arson ; Charles Brown, John Conroy, and John Paulmiar, breaking and entering ; Andrew J. Somerville, murder ; Andrew Kennedy and Joseph Jewett, murder ; Valentine Verne, false pretences (two charges) ; James Eastwood, false pretences ; F. Plank and T. Scofield, breaking and entering (three charges) ; and B. F. Davy, fraudulently using a trade mark.

Frank Phifpot, alias Woods, pleaded Guilty to charges of forging and uttering cheques, whereby Emily Pritchard, Sun Lee, and L. E. LuiU wig were defrauded. Philpott was sentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard labour.

George Draper was charged with having broken into tha warehouse of E. W. Mills and Co. (Limited), Featherston-street, and stolen a tin of caustio soda.

Prisoner said he was Guilty of stealing. He was placed on probation. His Honour Maid he took thia course on the recommendation of the Probation Officer, who had reported that the present was the first offence the prisoner was known to have committed, and he had an aged mother to support. Draper waa ordered to enter into his own recognis* ance of £50 to come up for sentence when called upon.

William Smith pleaded Not Guilty to a charge of having obtained 6a 6d from Geo. A. Mawson by means of false pretences — a valueless cheque— in April last.

The jury being unable to arrive at a verdict, were locked up for the' night. - - — They were released next morning, and Smith was remanded until next week for a new trial.

Charles Brown, John Conroy, and John Paulmier, three boys, were charged with having broken into the premises of Charles Cathie, clothing manufacturer, on the 4th June, and stolen 14 pairs of trousers, 10 suits of boys' clothing, and nine vests.

This case after being partially heard was adjourned to this morn* ing.

Martha Richards, an elderly woman, the wife of the former head teacher of the Parkvale school, near Grey town, was indicted on a charge of having wilfully set fire to the teachers' s residence on the 24th May last.

The jury, after a short retirement, acquitted the accused.

Andrew John Somerville was in* dieted for the murder of Arthur Herbert on the 6th June last.

The prisoner pleaded Not Guilty.
