Foxton Borough Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting was held last night at the Library Build* ings at 7 p.m. Present— The Mayor (T. P. Williams), Crs Jenks, Hamer, Bradcock, Wesfcwood and Walsh.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and correspond ence received was read. From clerk Borough Council, Woodville, asking for particulars afl to the lighting of the streets, and how many lamps wera used for the Borough. The request had been compiled with.
From Rev. G. Aitkens, eayidfif ha understood that the rates on residences occupied by ministers wert not claimed.
The Council decided that it had ' no power to forego the amount, ... although the Mayor believed that it "" was done by County bodies. From Alex. Jardine, solictor, act* ing for the promoters of the rail* way from Levin to Greatford, setting forth fall particulars, and suggesting that the Council should urge the Government for their consent to al- *-■-' low the line to be constructed. (Jr West wood proposed, and Or Walsh seconded, a resolution^! which notice had been givettl tfcftl* lows :— That the fences of the recreation reserve be put into repair, and that tenders be called for leasing reserve for one year. The Mayor said the experiment of letting the reserve had been A tried before, and was found to be injurious to the trees planted there. He objected to the motion as it now stood, but would be agreeable that it should be let for periods of three months, so that if it was found the reserve was likely to suffer it could be alter§d££
Cr Hamer was strongly against the motion, and instead of letting the reserve he would like to see some more planting done.
Cr Westwood said he only moved in the matter on account of the pA» sent state of the reserve. He found that the fencing was out of repair and cattle and horses were noWrfti* liberty to graze on the reserve;' and in fact it was a public paddock. By letting it he thought the Cttim&l would be remunerated, while ft^wesent they receive nothing, jusii thing getting into a worse state. ; He was willing to withdraw hi* motion, provided the reserve was £ept for purely recreation purposes. ''/,'' Cr Bradcock was in favour of leiting the reserve, as hie consid&ed people were making use of it noW when they should pay for it.

In regard to the letter of Alex. Jardine, solicitor, in reference:- to the proposed railway extension, the Mayor spoke at some length, and moved the following resoltt&pn, seconded by Cr Jenks, That this Council respectfully urge upon the j Government the necessity of oo^M* ing to an order by the Governor>iß»
Council being made for the construction of the proposed ManaWatu Junction Railway Lino, and that the Government give an assurance .to take tunning powers over the line when completed, as empowered bY section 219 of the Public Works Act, 1894, and that the Mayor be requested to join the deputation to wait on the Government to support the resolution. Carried. Proposed by Cr Westwood, seconded by Cr Walsh, That the recreation reserve fences be put in l ' repair, and that the reserve be kept for 'recreation purposes, and that the Mayor, Cr Walsh and the mover be a special committee to carry out this resolution. Carried.
Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Hamer, That tenders be called for forming and claying the Lady's Mile, and that the Works Committee meet on Wednesday evening at 7.30 to inspect specifications, same to be drawn out by the clerk. Carried.
The Council then adjourned.
