A Lady's Letter.
Wellington, July 27, 1895. The social and dance given by the Post Office and Telegraph staft'j last Monday night to Mr and Mrs Ward was a great success, and was much enj >yed by those present. Mr Ward, in his speech at supper, apologised for the absence of Mrs Ward, who is at present paying a short visit to the South with her children. During the first part of the evening songs wi'ie sung hy Meadames Perrin and Morris, and the Messrs Waters, Carr, Page and Lindsay. Among those present were the Premier and Mrs Beddou, the latter wearing a handsome black silk and velvet gown ; the Misses Seddon, one wearing a pretty black net and silk gown, and her sister cream silk and heliotrope trimmings ; Miss McKenzie wore black satin and jet. ; The social was given in Thomas' Hall, and the decorations were very elaborate and pretty, consisting chiefly of nifcan palms, ferns and wattle, and iht supper table was adorned with sniili pots of feme. Dancing was kept up i with great spirit until after 2 a.nii ; A\ the $tftf lloftting Qluk bail ie
Thorna3* Hall on Friday night there was a great crowd, so much so in* deed, that at the beginning of the evening dancing was anything bud pleasant. I don't think on the whole, and I have heard others say the same, that the ball was so suocessful as the previous ones given. Perhaps it was that.tHmJlßiil.waß not up to the usual good standard, the musicians there wefe four or five were strangers to me, and I must say wanted a little more practise- to-^ ge'ther. However, the decorations were splerfdiaY 'and whoever did it must certainly have felt rewarded for their trouble, for remarks of admira* tion were to be heard on all sides. Supper (an excellent one) was spread in a lnrge room on the third storey. Lord and Lidy Glasgow, Lady Alice Boyle, Miss Grace, Captain Preston, and Mr Gathorne-Hardy arrived shortly after nine and were received by Mr Pearce, President j»f: and Miss Pearce, togutbe^witfrlMr Field (captain) and Mrs ' Field.
