Manamatu Herald. SATURDAY, JULY 27, 1895. Extension of the f ramway.

« L__' The various public bodies through which the proposed extension of the Carnarvon Sanson Tramway will run are about to pass resolutions asking the Government to sanction, the building of this loop and to.wock the same when completed. It goes without saying that these resolutions will be carried unanimously as the extension from Kakariki on the North to Levin on the South would be of material benefit to all the settlers .along the route and to those residing 'far beyond. We are informed that money ig in hand, to oarrj out 4hi work nrq?idj4 «Q

hindrance to its execution and w9rkare made by the Government; We are surely uhder <l a Hew order of things li wheh obstructions are suppored possible to the introduction of some £150,000 of foreign capital into the colony, which money is not to bo sunk in freehold land awaiting a profit on the " unearned increnient" but is to be spent ill a legitimate enterprise which would benefit the opening up of a valuable district very materially, besides bringing the Bangitikei and Manawatu districts miles nearer Welling- , ton. We understand that the' Premier, upon principle, objects to railway companies, and believes all the lines should be owned by the Government. In theory we are quite with him but the casa in point must be looked upon as a Government line, the promoters being desirous to kand the working of it over to the Government, and they simply construct the line to Save the Government a present outlay and would, no doubt, accept any fair terras on which it could be purchased from them. Any objection raised to assisting the promoters cannot therefore come under the head of the objections suggested by the Premier, and we hope that when the Government understand the straightforward nature of the proposals made to them, and the unanimous wish of the settlers in these districts to have the line made, the Ministry will agree to meet the promoters on the terms suggested by them. This line has been so thoroughly discussed and continually approved that going over the ground again would be repeating but "an ofc told tale." The condition 3 suggested by the promoters are so much better than have ever been made before that no doubt can linger as to the approval of the public interested, and as we are given to understand the capital required is available, the assent of the Government is all that is needed to set the work in motion at once. A serious responsibility is thus cast upon the Ministry if they refuse the proposed expenditure of a large sum of. money in a district and at a time when money is so much needed to find labour a living.
