Dice-Throwing in Church. --• - -» — =- A curious custoiU was observed id the Parish church of St. Ives, Huntingdonshire in June, when, under the direction of the rector and churchwardens, a number of children raffled with dice for Bibles, one being given to each of the six boys and girls who scored the highest number of points in three throws. The strange Ceremony created a large amount of interest in the village, and large crowds flocked to the building during the proceedings. The cus-> torn originated in a bequest by a Dr. Wilde, of St. Ives, who left a sum of money large enough to provide a yearly income of £8, which was to be expended in 12 Bibles, " six for boys of good repute living in the parish," and a similar number for girls. The will of the testator stipulated that the raffle should take place on the Communion-table of the parish church, but that part of the direction has of late years been set aside in favour of the vestry table. The officiating clergyman receives 10s for the sermon preached on the occasion.
