Fatal Accident.
. Yesterday morning one of our welWmown fisherman, Walter Fair* ■* 'bihir, endeavoured to cross the bar § the river in a flafc-bottonied boat. The tea was too rough and the boat capsized. Fairbank managed to get into the boat again but had to hold pn, and by some means the painter got coiled round him, impeding his :/' Ittoveniettts. Messrs Leggett and Witsti noticed the accident from the s^tore and pulled to his assistance and ultimately got him into their i»a? "find"' ashore. When landed, Jiowever, the unfortunate man was nearly dead, as he must have been iiearly half an hour on the bar with the seas breaking over him. Mr Seabury, the pilot, was on shore and directed the steps to be taken to revive him, and also sent a telephone message for the chemist, Mr Hamer, but though making a particularly quusfr.,trip, he iound the man had been dead a quarter of an hour. : The deceased was a hardworking and civil man, about 88 years of age and regret is generally expressed at his untimely death. He had been in the district some six. or seven years; Fortunately he was a single man. An inquest is being held to-day.
