Foxton School Committee.
_♦- The monthly meeting of the above Committee was held .on Monday evening. Present— Messrs Rhodes, Walsh, Little, Westwood and Ray. In the absence of the, chairman, Mr Westwood took the ohair. The Clerk stated that since the last meeting the following sums had been received towards the School Fund :— Proseeda of conoert, £2 12s 5d (including donation of Ml from Mr Thynne) ; grant from Wanganui Education Beard for quarter ending
r- 1 i 31st March last, £7 13a Gd, being an increase on the preuous grant of £1 6*. Payments tnade since the last meeting were reported. The return of attendance for the quarter ending 30th Jnne, was read * which showed that the school had been opened 98 times (mornings and afternoons being reckoned separately) ; that 4 boys and 4 girls had been admitted daring the quarter, and 7 boys and 7 girls had left ; that the number on the school roll were 120 boyß *nd 123 girls or a total of 24H ; thai the largest attendance on any half-day had been 22G, and that the average attendance had been 192. G. Attention waa called again to' the wank of a shelter shed for boys. It ► was stilted that there was a standing offer of the Board to contribute half the cost— the Board's contribution not to exceed £7. The meeting considered a determined effort should be made to provide funds for a shelter ibed, A discussion took place on the subject of encouraging gymnastics amongst the scholars attendiug the school. It was suggested that a building Bhould be erected on the school grounds and fitted up as a gymnasium, and that possibly the Education Board would be prepared to contribute towards the expense of the building. A strong feeling was expressed in fa* Tor of giving attention to the physical | development of the children and it was considered that such an institu* tion as a gymnasium might by the addition of a library prove an attraction bo the youths of the town and keep tlrrm out of temptation to misspend their time. That immediately Mr Ciille?pie sends in the .list of children of school aye, a meetingof the Committee be called to consider the same. That the Clerk communicate with the Board of Education and enquire if they would be prepared to assist in erecting on ' the school ground a building to be used as a gymnasium. Two accounts wore passed for payment.
