A Napier Libel Case.
-♦ The Napier Supreme Court has been occupied all day with the libel lotion Cohen v. Whittington. Cohen who is Chairman of the Hospital Board, recently tendered his resignation, when the II aipawa Mail, of which the defendant is editor, had a paragraph of a rather rough description, in which he was described as a •• Brummagem philanthropist " whose word was unreliable. The directors of the Mail apologised, but Whittington refused to do so personally, hence thise action. Justification was pleaded. Evidence was called to show that goods were purchased for the Hospital at defendant's auction mart, bills being made ouj in the name of a clerk, and the other goods were obtained through Cohen from MeArthur's, but he charged the same price as ha paid, getting no commission. Cohen is a money-lender, and witnesses were called to show that he charged excessive rates of interest. - :i : , The case was only partly heard. — Press Association. .
