A SUGGESTION.
10 THE EDITOR OK THE MAXAWATB fafrBALD Sin.—l notice by the advertisement in the Evening Post tenders are called for 16 mile of river embankment at Moutoft. My four years' residence on the river bank on No. 1 section, and my working up and down the river, led me to think the matter out carefully. Cannot the river be improved and Straightened, the depth of water at the bar considerably increased, and the lowlands about the river less liable to heavy floods ? With loss of crops and grass, and in many Oases cattle and horses. I lost 9 horses in One flood myself. I say yes. My proposal is —Cut a drain from Moutoa to Foxton as large as a Priestman's dredge could work putting the refuse on one side—the South bank. Plant that bank with willow trees. After the trees were well rooted, on a favourable opportunity, divert the river through the large , drain or small canal, it would soon enlarge Hielf. For a time it would likely make the bar worse, and may alter the lower bend in the river, in fact may considerably ■traigbten it, then with the faster outflow, the bar would deepen considerably, and a larger class of steamers and sailing vessels would call, to take away the ever-increasing productions of a rich and fruitful district. What think you and the present inhabitants of my suggestion ? I make no charge, but if you carry it to a successful issue, such an improvement as X have roughly sketched out, you will remember me and vote me a section, that will enable me to come and again pitch my tent in your company. ' lam, &0., It. G. Knight, S.T.F. & CM. P.S.—The canal through Larkworthy's iwamp could be cut with a Priestman's dredge at very little difference in cost, with 16 miles of river embankment; the dimQnliies in law and equity could be overcome wwn the assistance of " The Public Works Act."
