It is reported in Simla that the Indian Government advises the permanent occupation of Chitral and the construction of a road thither. General Sir George White, Com-manderin-Chief in India ; Lieu-tenant-General Sir Henry Brackenbury, and Major-General Sir William Lockhart approve of the British occupancy of Chitral, as otherwise the natives will regard the British power as exhausted. The Ohio Republican Convention has declared in favour of honest money — gold, silver or paper — denounced free wool, and nominated Mr McKinley for the Presidency. After several months' sojourn at Hiroshima, the Mikade has returned to his Imperial residence in Tokio, the capital. He was received in triumph by the populace, who showed intense enthusiasm at his return, the whole city being en fete. The magnificent decorations formed a special feature of the welcome. The Japanese fleet is bombarding Keelung, on the north coast of Formosa. Sir Hercules Robinson wag warmly welcomed on his arrival at Capetown, the crowd cheering him heartily. The scene in the streets has not been equalled since Sir Bartle Frere's farewell. The Japanese are rapidly evacuating Liao-tong Peninsula. Japanese troops have landed at Peio Island, North Keelung, despite vigorous opposition. Lightning set fire to petroleum stores in Hamburg, and 5500 tons of oil in tanks were burned, besides 86,000 barrels. The damage is estimated at £100,---000.
