Notes and Events.

jpr The baleful practice of paying only ' infcejujiitj&nt visits to . church was beautifully illustrated in a Melbourne suburb a few days ago (says ♦Woomera' in the Australasian). The" head of the house was not what jnight be called a regular church goer. In fact bis last visit was' on ibe occasion of his wedding, and he

is now the joint owner of three promising children. He was out walking vVith a frie'rid la3t Sunday, and as they We're passing a Church the friend suggested that they should drop in and hear the sermon. They did so; but the husband's confusion can be ihiagihed when his wife, on seeing him, rushed from her pew with alarm written in whi'e letters on her motherly face. Gra ping him by the arm, and all unmindful of church dedoriim, she cried—". What is it, Tom ?— oh, tell me what it is— I can bear the worst. Has anything happened to the children ; for pity's sake tell me what's the matter i" And it took quite ten minutes to as sure the poor lady that her husband had come to church of his own ac cord, or rather of his friend's accord.

We Jiave been asked why We do not publish news about the proposed Levin -Greatford Railway. It has been for an excellent reason* there has been none to publish. $W the past twelve months some person residing in London, has been communicated with, and it has been stated he is very hopeful of being able to raise the necessary Capital. Apparently his hopes have risen and fallen in sympathy with the money market, and his latest letter contains nothing more definite than hope. As " giltedged " securities are comparatively valueless as deeent revenue producers, he hopes those not " giltedged " — the Levin-Greatford line — may attract more attention. That is all and nothing more, except information has been recived in town that the chief promoter needs further financial assistance to enable him to prosecute the scheme to. a successful issue. Everything that has been suggested in other newspapers is founded on a vivid imagination of the effect of hope— which now so long deferred is making the heart sick.
