Open the first meeting, read the notice of his appointment, and took the chair. ?, Proposed by~Mr Gardner, seconded by Mr Wilaoir, That Mr Nye be chairman. Mr Gardner said he would have wropOßeH M* Wilson but owing to ' -^circumstances he would not now. Mr Nye desired not to be nominated Lag he was getting up in years. Mr Wilson withdrew his proposal, which was agreed to. The Chairman then put Mr Nye's proposal that Mr Gardner be Chairman, which was carried unanimotfsty? Mr Gardner returned thanks and said. he only took the appointment temporarily. Proposed by Mr Nye, seconded by MfGtower, That T. F. Gibson be elected Clerk for 12 months from date, for. the Mukakft River Board at a/salary of £ls per year/subject to -three months notice or three months', salary at any time during th* currency of the appointment. The question of bonus to Secretary if nju^h toore labour than expected be favourably considered at the end of yearvr-Carried, Mr Wilson said he had. been all ronnd the Motoa river-banks and found the damage to the banks was not so serious as supposed. So far •a his view went the damage could be repaired at no great cost, probably £150. Hr.'Nye wanted to know if the banks were, strong enough to resist floods, or would it all need remaking. Mr Wilson said that in places where the bank was washed away the new ones would want making stronger but the banks still standing would- not need to be interfered with. In many places the floods never came over the embankment. It was agreed that the Board meet at the Diagonal drain on Monday ..at 9 a.m. to, inspect the embankments. The meeting then adjourned to Tuesday .at 10 a.m.
