The Pomahaka Purchase,
The proceedings in the AsaeM* ment Court for the Pomahaka district throw a lurid light on that famous purchase. The valuer. MN sessed the State tenants at some* thing upward of £4 per acre, stating that he did so on the basts' oH&r rents paid. The Magistrate (sfc Hawkins) objected to this as a basis of assessment, and the valuer, thus thrown on his own jugement, at once offered to reduce the valuations 1 to £2 14s per acre. The Magistral*, however, took evidence on the subject, and the result was that he fixed the value of the land at £2 per acre. This was for the pick of the land. The Government paid £2 ) 103 per acre for the whole block. - Comment is unnecessary. — Pott. . . r} THE SUN BAKING ~"P0WDI& eclipses all others.
