At the annual meeting of the Manawatu and West Coast A., and P. Association at Palmerston on Saturday there were 50 nominations for the 36 posts of committeemen, and in the balloting amongst others omitted appear the names of Messrs J. 6. Wilson, G. H. Engels, H. F. Davidson and J. R. McLennan. The A. & P. Association has decided to discontinue holding ram fairs. The Flax Commissioners deserve well of their country, as they appear to have possessed both industry and courage. It is reported that one enthusiast submitted a poultice, a lotion, a Balve, an aperient medicine, and a preservative made from the shippings of the green leaf. The Commission, even after tasting some of the production and examining others, admit their inability to declare their value. By an extension 'of time, it seems an opportunity would have been given the Com" mission to have exhaustively (to themselves) reported on the same. r l he ways of persons assembled in public meetings are not to be guaged. On Monday night -the meeting decided between two past committeemen, one had attended a fair number of times, the other had not attended one single meeting. Yet the public chose the latter. It appears curious looked at in this light. On our fourth page appears an advertisement from T. Fisher Unwin, of Paternoster Square, London. It relates to books to buy, and read, and keep. We commend attention to the facts, and, having received samples, can honestly say any of the series are worth obtaining. We notice by the report of the householders meeting at Otaki, that Mr Franklin, a solicitor, was appointed chairman, and owing to a tie in the balloting he offerred to permit of a second ballot. The meeting had had enough and asked him to give his vote. Thus, even the best of men err at times, as the Act really makes it imperative for the Chairman of the meeting to decide ties. A short time ago a leaf of green flax was dressed at Mr Kutherford's mill which measured nineteen feet. A sample was sent to him, and it may find its way to some London fibre broker; Mr Haycock, the gentleman who. so obligingly exhibited samplesrin this town some three years ago of felt, wadding, Ac got a deoided knock from the Commission who have reported that "neither the felting or lagging are as good as the imported artiole." A good many owners of orchards over which the flood poured have lost a lot of apples from the run of water shaking the trees, which caused the fruit to fall and wash away. They ought to have been gathered before the flood came. How are the mighty fallen 1 The report of the Commissionen appointed to examine the flax-dressing machines is issued by a Liberal Government as "a miscellaneous leaflet!" We also understand that no reply has been made to the Commissioners' suggestion for an extension of time. The "leaflet" issued last month contains nothing more than what we previously had ascertained to have been the conclusions arrived at by the Commissioners. Honey is more plentiful in the Castlematne district this year than it has been for many years past Large quantities are being consigned to Melbourne, the price ? obtained being 2£d. per Ib. Though the flax industry is in rather a languishing state, thanks to our Government, yet all interest in it is not lost. On the authority of Mr Rutherford, one of the oldest millers in the colony, we are assured that the green strippings from the leaf are wonderfully enjoyed by cattle, and possess great fattening qualities. In Nelson he always feeds his stock with the waste and they keep rolling fat. To-morrow Messrs Gorton ASonholda stock sale at Feilding. Mails for the United Kingdom close at Wellington on Friday afternoon. Corres. pondenoe need not be specially addressed. The Celtio King's cattle sold in London »t6Jdto6dperlb. The Rate Collector for the Borough notifies an " Owner" of a section thai a summons has been issued for rates due thereon. Coulton, assistant -paymaster on board H.M.S. Mildura, for whose arrest a warrant was recently issued on the charge of embezzlement, has been captured in Sydney. At the householders meeting at Wanga" nui last Monday the Rev C. H. Garland asked why the inspector's reports had not been touched on in the report. Mr Spurdle briefly explained the position, commenting on the various reports, which, he said, were not on the whole not so good as they should have been. He explained himself as averse to the percentage system, which he considered was unwise and unprofitable, and thought that character and tone spoke more for a school than high percentages." This is very satisfactory. Such a statement made by the ohairman of the Wanganui Committee will no doubt be read by members of the Education Board, and noted. Percentages are but a poor guide to the saocess of a school The Messrs Robinson notify that trespassers with dog or gun on the Herrington Estate will be prosecuted. Members of the Mukaka River Board are reminded that the first meeting will be held on Saturday, at 2 p.m. The man Hare, with other aliases, was yesterday, at Palmerston, committed for trial on the onarge of stealing the horse B. Spelman purchased from him. The train got through from Palmerston today, and arrived at the usual hoar 1.30. 1 Heads of families, storekeepers, settlers oarefnl housewives, young and old, rich and poor, alike will save heaps of money |by making their purchases at the Great Partnership Sale, now going on at Te Aro House, Wellington.
