We had the pleasure of receiving a deputation of business-men lasf. Tuesday as to the Shops and Shop Assistants Act, and at their request we quoie the section about which they were not sure. Part of Section 3 says " Whenever any day iil any week is a public holiday or half-holiday, then it shall not be inctimbant on any shopkeeper who closed his shop oh sufch public holiday or half-holiday to close it also on the halfholiday provided by this Act." Section 4 recites : — " Notwithstanding anything contained in this Act— all shops in any city, borough, or town district may continue to be open in the afternoon of the workingday nest preceeding Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday and the Sovereign's Birthday, and Easter Monday respectively, although such working-day may be the day appointed for the closing of shops at the hour of one of the clock in afternoon in such city, borough or town district." The School Committee's Election Act is a curious statute. It commands that a committee must be nominated a week in advance, and then gives power to the public meeting to nominate any number more, saving certain restrictions, and to ballot for the lot. This is double banking work with a vengeance. Writing on the forthcoming Committee election next Monday we may point out that the Act says " No elector may give for any one candidate more than one vote ' ! On a tie in the Voting for candidates, the chairman must give his casting vote. The wonderful neV/ cut, made by the Aorangi Drainage Board, near the Oroua Bridge, is said to be answerable for much of the damage done by the flood.
