Wests mere was quickest on his legs, followed by Blarney, Monte Carlo, Ua, Scot Free, Lorelei and Rangipuhi in the order named. No alteration occurred until about half a mile had been traversed when Westmere died away, Monte Carlo taking his place, Lorelei also improving her position. About three furlongs from home, Scott Free had the lead, followed by Lorelei, Monte Carlo close up. On entering the straight Lorelei passed Scot Free and won under the whip by'haif a length from Scot Free, Monte Carlo a good third, Ua fourth, Blarney fifth, Westmere sixth, and Rangipuhi last.
