A private telegram received from a Chinese official in Hiroshima states that peace was concluded yesterday. Eeporfcs state that unless peace is concluded the Japanese intend to I advanoe on Pekin.
forces* with guides, occupied the hills beyond the Panjkora River, but a large force of the enemy compelled them to retire, which they did in excellent order. Heavy guns covered the retreat, but eventually the enemy came within thirty yards. Colonel Baltye was killed, and there were a few other casualties on the British side. A detachment of Sepoys* in an attempt to Cross Panjkora River to reconnoitre, Were compelled to retire, one British officer being killed and two wounded. The casualties among the Sepoys numbered 17. The Sepoys were separated from the main body owing to the enemy destroying a pontoon bridge by means of floating enormous logs down the river. The British forces while retreating inflicted heavy loss to the enemy. A friendly chief, Dir Khan, has sent 2000 men to relieve Dr Robertson at Chitral.
