A Lady's Letter.

Wellington, April ii, 1896. I was glad to see such a marked improvement in the number of people attending Mr , Manghan Barrett's third concert last Thursday night. The concert itself was an excellent one in every way, and the enjoyment of it was greatly added to by the harp playing of Miss Constance Hatheley, a new arrival here.. She played several sweetly pretty airs for which she gained great ftftlatise, and also accompanied Miss Hilda Welbains in La Serenata (Toeti), tbe effect being very pretty. I need hardly say that Mr Barnett obtained an encore for each of his pieces, which were performed with his usual good execution. Miss H. Williams also sang a taking little, song called " You see," she looked very well in a pale colour satin trimmed with narrow black velvet and chiffon. Miss Hatheley wore a pretty white gown with a white silk sash and lace bertha, she also wore two medals, bronze and silver, gained by her harp playing. Among the audience I noticed Mr and Mrs E. J. Reid, Mr and Mrs Firtb, Mrs Ward, Mrs. and Miss Duncan, Miss Pearce, the Misses Williams, Mrs W. Levin, Mr and Mrs Waters, Mrs Martin, tbe Misses Wilson, Prouse, Swain son, Gore, Elliot, Hales, Ritchey and others. Lord and Lady Glasgow intend coming back to Wellington in time for the Queen's birthday, but I hear that tbe ball is to take place later on. I am glad to hear that Lady Augusta Boyle is so far recovered from her dreadful accident as to be able to leave her room. The Autumn Flower Show opens on Wednesday and continues for twoor three days. The Wellington Operatic Sooiety are getting on splendidly with thi play " Ruddigore " which is to be performed next month. Mrs H. Millar is taking the principal part, so that it is sure to be well done, as she is a thorough actress as well as a good singer. I believe this will be tbe first time " Ruddigore " has been staged in New Zealand, so it ought to draw. f3T Mrs Hutchison is giving a dance next Tuesday night, an account of which I hope to be able to give you in my next letter. Lady Campbell has left Wellington to make her home in Hawkes Bay district. The musical circles here sustained a loss When she left and I am sorry to say that Mr W. A. Day is also leaving Wellington shortly, these are two good singers that we can't spare, but that we will have to I suppose, there being -40 help for it. Signjw
