Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 1880. The Wanganui Eduoatlon Board.
- 0 Another trial of strength is coming off in Wanganui between the representatives of school buildings and the representatives of scholars. In other words the contest is a foregone conclusion from the start. Justice is one thing, the law another. An election takes place to secure a member tor the Board in the room of Mr Notnaan resigned. He is a Wanganui man, and Wanganui badly wants another townsman elected in his^place. There is just a Buspicron- v tbae~Boine. •©f • -tbe *o\&
members have not been above ad Vancing the interests of their family circle in working the Board, and a little new blood is most desirable for the good of all. We have written so often in this strain, and have so often pointed out where the old identities hold the fort, that we ask to be excused if we again put tbp whole question concisely before our readeis. There are nifle nipmWa of th^ Board ; there are 6.007 of an average attendance fir the third quarter of the year 1894 ; and ther» are 101 schools. Why we have no phow of returning our fair proportion of members lies in the fact that every pchoolcommittee has an equal vote. In the district north of the Rangitikei river there are 68 schools with an avenige attendance of 8501. and south of Ranpritikei there are 88 schools with &n average attendance of 2606. The schools outnumber us by 26, but the scholars only outnumber us by 10001 At present the Board graciously permits us to have two representatives, taking seven for the rest of the district, whereas the 6000 scholars should have a say in the election and to provide nine members, the rate of representatives would be one and a half to a thousand, and then we should be entitled to 8f members, and the northern portion to 6J members. At present the Act permits the Board to be more the representatives of wood and stone than of living creatures, and until the Act is improved so it will continue to be. The contest is only good to make an expressive remonstrance to .the very unfair manner the old members of the Board hang to their seats, and the absurdity in the working of thev?Act which permits the representatives of the children from having a comparative ™ice in the management of a Board set up to , watch their chief interests.
