Fire.

On Sunday afternoon Mr Border's Hotel at Foxton had a very narrow f.-cap^ from being destroyed by fire. It appears that about a quarter to four o'clock in the afternoon three lads who were on the river bank at the back of the house told Mr Border that smoke was coming out of the roof of the house. Mr Border with several others, amongst whom were H. Bradeoek,~T. Fiizroy, A. Tim mins, C. O'Loughlio, C. Blunell, and B. Brown, ran out and got buckets, axes, &c, and went upstairs to the bed room . which was on fire and found that; the fire had commenced at the head of the bed which stood in the corner of the room. They found that the bedding was blazing and after extinguishing it, the wall was cut away, which was found to be well in flame but after r&uch hard work was subdued. A mail called •• Captain " oothft bed in which the fire tiroke out, but it is ; npt certain that he was in the room that, afternoon, and thus it is difficult to say who is to blame. Where the fire started it appears as though the spring matrresa had been ignited, either by a match carelpssly-ihrpwn on it or a pipe laid down. 1 . The hotel \n lea«e<f to Mr Border hut is owned by Mr T. 6. McCarthy. The building, furniture and stock i insured in the New Zealand Inaurance Company, for which Mr T. F. Gibson is the local agent. The building is insured for £1000.

The damages are estimated under £20.
