Fire at Palmerston North.

A serious fire occurred at Palmerston North on Thursday morniDg at 2 o'clock,?; .the Th^fcra Royal, owned by Mr Linton, ana two shops owned by Mr Kerslake, being burned to the ground. One of Kerslake's shops was occupied by the Singer Bewing Machine Company. The theatre was insured for £1000 • — £soo each in the Alliance and London and Lancashire ; Kerslake's building was £400— £250 in the Standard, and £150 in the London, Liverpool, and Globe. Donelly's stock was insured ie the Imperial for £40. ':.'.;■ None of the others were insured. Most of the stocks were saved. Carmody's Central Hotel, ad_ joining, was slightly damaged- .Bhe :.;..■■ insurance on the building, in the .-. New Zealand office, is £800 ; on the stock £150 aDd the furniture £450, in the North German. MrWalde-^ . grave lost his stable, and Mr LintDtt had a room damaged at the back of the theatre, on which there is no insurance. The Pollard Company, whioh was playing a season there, lost part of its wardrobe, scenery, &c, oh which. there is no insurance. The cause of the fire is unknown* It was first discovered on the stage of the theatre.
