Owing to the Protectionist outcry the French Government has cancelled the order calling for foreign tenders for the supply of tinned moats for the army and navy, and will confine the supply to French firms. Great damage has been caused by frost in Italy. Troops are being employed shoot* ing the wolves which have come down from the mountains in Pied~ mont and are ravaging the country. The Turkish Government deny that the military reserves are being called out. The Emperor of Germany will open the canal from the Baltic to the North Sea in June. The trial of seven Paris editors, who are charged with attempting to levy blackmail on public companies, has begun.
