Fire at Awapuni.
« We regret to learn that Mi* H. Waldegrave's residence at Awapuni was totally destroyed by fire at 3 a.m., on Saturday. It seems the fire started in a large workshop and man's room situated about four feet from the residence, and the flames spreading rapidly to the residence, both were consumed in a short time. When the family retird to rest the previous evening everything was apparently safe, but about the hour named Mrs Waldegrave was awakened by a loud noise, and almost immediately the employee, a young man named Frank Paul, commenced knocking on the side of the wall stating that the residence was on fire. Mr Waldegrave was quickly roused, and he had just time to remove the children and snatch up a few clothes. The total insurance was £700 in the New Zealand office as follows : — Houses and outbuilding, £500 ; furniture, £150; piano, £50. Mr Waldegrave estimates his loss at £200.— Standard.
