Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, FEB. 7, 1895. Excursion Routes.
* We are glad to notice from a para graph in the Standard that the member for Palmerston, Mr F. Pirani has brought before the notice of the Premier and the General Manager for Railways the other .day the advisability of including Palmerston to Foxton amongst the routes for school excursions during the present season, and received a promise that the suggestion would be adopted. Mr Pirani has gained an enviable name for his alertness to the wants of his district and by his attention to the above has added one more proof. We differ a great deal with Mr Pirani's views, but we always gave him the credit for energy, which he has endorsed by his aotions. There is no doubt but that a cheap excursion to the Port would be popular, and would make a pleasant break in the lives of the children brought up inland. If something like reliance could be placed upon these excursions taking place, they could be further improved upon by co operation with the Queen of the South, and an actual sea voyage added to the variety. However as the steamer is dependent upon the tides, the trains would have to run to puifc the steamer. One reason why we urged upon our townspeople to observe the same half-holiday as Palmerston was with the object of cheap excursions ran by the railway being patronised both I
way*. Even now it is possible, for though perhaps the shops would not close on "Wednesday, yet enticing fares through the Gorge to Woodville would lure many away, and the trip could be done by the ordinary railway timetable. If it is well to bring people from inland to the sea, it surely should be justifiable to take people from the sea coast, inland, at cheap rates. As the trains now run, and are not a quarter filled, it would cost little and might be worth much to try cheap special fares.
