The New Primate.

# — , — The Anglican General Synod, sitting at Nelson on Friday elected, at the first ballot, Bishop Cowie, of Auckland, Primate. The new Primate is the second son of Alexander Cowie, of Auchterleee, Abeideenshire. He was born in 1881 and educated at Trinity Hall, Cambiidge. He was admitted to the B.A. degree in 1855 and to the M.A. in 1865 and the D.D. degree was conferred upon him in 1869. In 18. r >B the Bishop was chaplain to Lord Clyde's army at Lucknow in 1858, and to Sir Neville Chamberlain's column against the Afghans in 1868-4. He received » both medals and clasps for these campaigns. In 1869 he was consecrated Bishop of Auckland in Westminster Abbey by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and Bishops Selwyn and Browne. He is the author of " Notes on the Temples ol Cashmere," " A visit to Norfolk v Island," and " Oar last year in New Zealand."
