ing the sijm of four pounds
seventeen shillings and sixpence from Henry Border by means of a valueless cheque at Foxton J on arresting ithe accused he said it was a mistake as the cheque was given to him by the publican at Levin in change of a larger cheque which he had changed there ; on my way to Foxton with him he said he did not know where he had got the cheque he must have got it on the Otaki race course ; he also admitted this -morning he received a blank cheque from an Italian hawker named Lansberg, at Levin; I saw the accused sigto.D. C. Monteith to the prisoner's *ffri)perty sheet marked C ; the writing appears to be similar to the cheque marked A. The prisoner, being duly oautioned, reserved his defence.
The accused was committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court to be holden at Wellington. Duncan Calverfc Monteith was further charged with making a false document on the Bank of Australasia, Otaki, for £4 17s 6d, purporting to fee signed by John Kibbell. The evidence was very similar to the first case and the accused was committed for trial.
