Manamatu Herald. SATURDAY, JAN. 5, 1895. Shop arid Shop- Assistants.
The Act passed last session in relation to the above came into force on the first day of this year. We would... call the -.attention of our Borough authorities that the day on Which shops are to be closed in accordance with this Act shall be appointed by the local authority by speciarresolution in this month, and ' in the same month every year, and that the " special resolution " shall only be passed at a special meeting of the Council of which public notice shall have been given by advertisement at least $eyen days prior to the date of meeting/ It is provided that in the event of any day other than Saturday being appointed by the local authority as closing-day under this Act, then' any shop-keeper shall be entitled to close his shop on Saturday in lieu thereof. Shopkeepers had better taw ftgUnoe
through the Act, as it insists on women, and young persons under eighteen years of age being only permitted to work for fifty-two hours in a week, and a notice must be exhibited in a public place in the .shop stating such hours. Before the Council fixes the day to be observed as a half-holiclayj it would be well if the Mayor converted ft meeting of the tradespeople, and of others interested in the town to consider the question, as we have heard it suggested that it would be perhaps to general advantage to arrange the half-holiday on the same day as Palmerston observes it, so that should the suggested Summer excursions be carried into effect on the railway advantage might be taken of the facilities offered. The decision is one of importance and should be arrived at only after mature deliberation.
