The Liberal Government.
Mi* Hennah, formerly of the Ballarat Fire Brigade, and a relative of the Premier, has assumed the duties of Chief Messenger at the Government Buildings, It is anderstood that he will also continue 'to ... act as Inspector of fire appliances )&* * the various Government institutipha •• throughout the colony. Mr Huetf, who has been acting as Chief Messenger since Mr Revett**, retirement, has been appointed assistant to Mr Hennah. So says the Pyst, and also in an article " the job long contemplated by the Premier of : foisting his near relative or connection, Mr Hennah, formerly! <jf -Bilk- . rat, upon this colony MGhief.. Messenger, is at last actually conAv summated. There is little doobti that Mr Hennah has long" bleeti destined to succeed Mr Bevell— probably he was brought from a _ Ballarat for the purpose. SmSef=feis : arrival here he has Been employed Ib various odd jobs for Ministers,/ his experience as a . BaUarat. fireman furnishing an excuse fo^ Uiis I being engaged to report on fire appliances at lptiatig as^luitis: ahd iii other similar duties. Mr Hennah may be quite competent to perform the dtrtiei 1 of Chief Messenger, but it is a shame that such a position, when vacant, ' should not be given to some com- . ; petent man already in the Servile;; ' £ or who has claims on the colony : fottl ; past services. Even if none of the messengers are qualified for promo-' " f tion, there are many men who have served New i^ the field atid slfei^^r^M^ 4^k***^ defence, who, to flfif^fKl iiait of it, are quite as well quAlified;for the position as Mr Henoah in all but the " one important respect of b«ing a family connection of Mr Seddon's. It is, we sjtyy, --u, -diwiWul^thing.^ that all t^esemed ehquld^ pdU^dj over in favour of a" comparauve new^* comer, who has na olaims, other than those arising from tits* family connection with the Premier.
The Otago Daily Tim^s the <#htf - 00 . day published a list of 25 relative! or supporters of tke Hon. John M'Kenzie who had been provided for during that gentl6feail^ 'tofm^otl / office through his influence *lb but / one being in the Publio Service.,** The Ohrisfccburch PrwnoiT'XamjbfrA ments this list with van addHunndr 9V 19, eighteen of these appointments ~" being in the Public Swvice. It must be remembered that most of these public appointments bi«ebWn made in direct the law regarding aamiestoh to ; the .PuWio:! Service.- •' • --' &i i} 4?
