This is an exemplification of the old adage. Why does a cat fall upon its feet ? This subject came agaiu a few days ago before the Academy of Sciences, Pads. The question put to the savants by M. Maurice Levy was, " Can a cat, while in the air, turn without any impulse being given by the hand which stops it, and without finding .any appreciable aid in the pressure which the air exercises on it ?" The mathematicians were at variance on the subject, each side basing its argument on " mechanical principles." M. Levy, however, proved, to the satisfaction of his colleagues, that a cat can, by suitable changes in the attitude of its body, make the necessary pirouette without seeking any assistance exterior to itself. In the same way an acrobat, leaping from the ground, might turn in the air by bending his body suitably. The articulations of the limbs of a man, and of certain other animals, notably of cats, have sufficient liberty of action to execute these movements. Our Paris correspondent under date of 16th November writes: — The death of Alexander 111, Emperor of Russia, at Livadia, although not unexpected has produced in France, where he was regarded as the only sincere ally of the French Republic, a profound shock to public opinion. The Czar, who is no more, possessed one quality, which belongs to great statesmen i — namely, resolution or obstinacy, according to the stand-point from which it is viewed. Throughout his whole reign he was the resolute, the unwavering friend of peace, and on more than one ocoasion he threw all the energy and resolution of his character on the side of peace: As one of . the most important factors in the main- | tenance of the peace of Europe, he regarded the alliance between Russia and France. , This policy he has bequeathed to his son and successor, and, as it is apparently founded on the mutual interests of both 1 nations, there seems little doubt of its being maintained.
