Kereru.
(from our own correspondent.) Thursday, Dec. 18. A sad accident occurred yesterday in Levin by which a child eighteen month's old, the son of Mr Boderick McDonald, lost his life. A man in a trap named Mi* Mills driving past by some means ran over the little fellow, the wheel passing over the abdomen. He lived several hours in agony. Yesterday a pleasant afternoon was spent at the Kereru School. Mrs B. Gardner, of Paiaka, had promised the children a prize for the best reader in school, and she and Mrs Bell undertook the difficult task ot deciding to whom the prize should be given. After a deal of uncertainty and trouble, for there are quite a number of nice readers in the Bchool, Mrs Gardner decided to give three prizes, one in the IV, V and VI, one in the II and 111, and one in the I Standards. The names of the winners are as follows : — Peter Hema (Maori) I ; Patrick McGau I ley, II; Annie Cameron, 111. The prizes will be distributed next Thursday, at the annual picnic.
