Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, DEC. 6, 1894. Public Opinlon.

After the resolution passed by the Borough Council on. Monday night, and the one carried at the public meeting on the same night, the Postal Department will discover that in the opinion of those best competent to judge, the new mail arrangements are considered exceedingly unsatisfactory. The letter sent by tbe Department is a wonderful document, when it is remembered that the whole question is that of delivering the mails for Foxton to Foxton. Of course anyone reading the letter sent by Mr Gray, the Secretary to the Department, can see at a glance that other causes have been urged, by which he was induced to do tbat which he has done. "He received many representations from other persons " presumably living in other places, "in "favour of the service starting from

Shannon." The public meeting has asked the Postmaster-General to lend his assistance to find out who these " other persons '' who have interfered with the Foxton mail delivery, are, and where they reside. This is certainly a fair request to make, as by heeding the statements of these other per eons a grave inconvenience has been inflicted npon the residents in the town. We have no doubt but that the Postmaster-General has been led astray by some officials in his Department, and regrets, as he says he does, to find the change is not viewed as un advantageous one. We do not therefore expect that he will refuse to act upon the suggestion made to him and discover how and by whom this interference has been caused. There are rumours current, which, for the good fame of our public institutions should be quieted, and only an official inquiry is at all likely to set the matter at rest.
