The Opium Traffic.
The four AntKOpium Sooieties of London have addressed a letter to the Chinese Minister to Great Britain and France stating that ifc is constantly asserted that the Indian opium trade brings in so much revenue to the Chinese Government tbat it would shrink from any course which would diminish that revenue, and that it is, indeed, as much in love with the trade as the Indian Government itself, and asking from his Excellenoy a distinct pronouncement on the subjeot. His Excellenoy Sieh Fu Chung in reply states that the efforts of the various Anti. Opium Societies have his hearty sympathy and that he desired to emphasise the. fact that his Government, fche local authorities, the literati, and the people are sincere in their wish to suppress opium.
