Foxton Borough Council.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held at the Library buildings last night at 7.80 p.m. Present— The Mayor (T. P. Williams), Ora Jenks, Hamer, Brad~ cock, Austin, McMillan and Westwood. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Inward correspondence contained a letter from Auditor-General, for warding the half-yearly balance sheet of the Borough duly audited. From Postmastei>General as follows :— General Post Office, Wellington, 29th Nov. 1894. Sib, — I have the honour, by direction of the PostmnsteisGeneral, to acknowledge the receipt of the petition, dated the 10th instant, signed by yourself and other residents of Foxton, urging that the coach service oonneoting Foxton with the Manawatu Bailway should continue to start from Foxton, in the place of Shannon, as favoured by the Post Office. The Postmaster-General has also received many representations from other persons in favour oi the service starting from Shannon after the arrival of the North and South morning trains, whereby business I people would be able to transact their business at Foxton, and return to Shannon in time for the evening trains for Wellington and Palmer* ston ; and making it possible at the same time, to arrange the following mail table :— Leave Shannon 11 am. arrive Foxton 1 p.m. Leave Foxton 8.80 p.m., arrive Shannon 5.30 p.m. Under such a time table the people of Foxton will have about two and a half hours in which to
reply to letters leaving Wellington and Palmerston by the morning trains, a convenience the PostmasterGeneral considers far in advance of what is now secured under existing arrangements. 4: In deciding that the service should start from Shannon and return the - same day in time for the evening trains* the Postmaster-General believed that he was studying the .., general convenience of the settlors at both ends, as well as those residing en route ; and he much regrets to find that so many of the' residents of Foxton do not consider the change an advantageous one in any respect. I have the honour to be, Sir, Your obedient servant, s * ;•* W. Quay, secretary. J &. Coley, asking permission -to erect a shed on Harbour^street and offering rent of 10s a year. - The Public Works Committee's Report was read. The following resolutions were proposed :-?- . Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr McMillan, That this Council regrets the action taken by the Postal Department in accepting thi service from Shannon for the con* veyance of the mails to Foxton, in opposition to the protest forwarded by the Mayor prior to the date of tenders closing. This Council would point out that already on two days of - the week we have a mail closing at i 8.15 p.m. The time fixed for the arrival of the Wellington mail is one hour later than the time the maila have been received at Foiton and allowing lor delivering the inward and closing the outward mail, only one hour and three quarters is given ; \ to reply to correspondence. Under i present arrangement" we have a Wellington mail closing at 8.30 a.m. aud 8 p.m. every day and at 8.15 p.m. also twice a week. Therefore there is anything but an advance in the new mail arrangements and that the old service is far preferable. The Mayor pointed out that the coach service was initiated by the Foxton residents who were going to subsidise it prior to the arrangement made with the Postal Department. The present service suited the Birgesses, the proposed one would be of no use at all. /. Cr Austin did not think this . ■ business was the Council's business, Cr McMillan thought anything ' done serving the interests of the -*i town was the province of the Council to interfere. He objected to Cr Austin's view of public matters. He would however rather., the. mailtr went by Kereru or to Levin. 3?he half mile on the other side .of the river at Shannon was on private property and w«- aiwaya bad; in the winter. * ; * The resolution was carried nnauimously. He heard thst manuka stumps. had been left standing in the formation, and it was also not level or even graded. ; * The Mayor explained that ihe / stumps were being cut but they bad only been left on the ouUide of the ten foot formation. ■-' . . . . ,^,, ■'.]■?
