Foxton Borough Council.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Council v/as held at the Libra) y Buildings last night. Present— The Mayor (T. P. Williams), Crs. Jenks, Hamer, Bradcock, Weatwood, Austin and McMillan. The minutes of the last meetiog were read and confirmed. The report of tho Library Committee was presented, which recommended a reduction in the salary paid to the custodian as from the Ist of January next. The Mayor briefly explained the position. The report was agreed to. The Public Work? Committee's report was read, which recommended the forming and claying of the Moutoa road and the lowering of cuttings on the cross road. The following correspondence was read ;— George Hughes, asking to have his name placed on the Burgess list. Premier, re Lioensing Bill. E. Pigotfc, asking to inspect Wirokino stock yard. Colonial Secretary, stating that ther« was no reason why the Borough should not publish the annual balance sheet. Charitable Aid Board, sending cheque for Borough's disbursements. G. Nye, asking if the Borough still desired to have the gravel in his pit, as Mr Strang had asked him for it. J. T. Ray, ie transfer from G. Nye to Council of land for road. The following resolutions were proposed : — Proposed by Cr Bradcocfr, seconded by Cr Hamer, That the cleric be instructed to write to Mr Buxton drawing his attention to tha bad state of the gate in Main street, near Post Office. Carried. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr McMillan, That this Counoil place the name of Mr G. Hughes on the Burgess list on January Ist 1895, and to instruct the clerk to write expressing regret that his name was omitted from the Burgess list. Carried. Proposed by Cr Hamer, seconded by Cr Bradcock — That the clerk be instructed to write to Mr W. Duddin, requesting a declaration as to signature made before a J P. be forwarded to Foxton Borough Council, when the money held will be paid over. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Jenks, That the members of this Council express their heartfelt sympathy with those who have been bereaved by the loss of the Wairarapa, and form themselves into a Committee to raise funds to relieve those who have been left in want; through the disaster. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Jenks, pro forma. That the recommendation of the Public Works Committee bo adopted, and that tenders be called for the work recommended by them, to be in by the 14th inßtant, and that Crs Jenks, McMillan and tho Mayor be a committee tc receive and accept tenders for same or otherwise. The Mayor urgad the work to be done. Cr Austin favoured tho cuttings being done. Cr McMillan objected to the Moutoa road being simply clayed. He r advocated an expenditure of £100 in forming, claying and metalling as far as it would go. Tho Mayor said the forming, claying, and metalling of the Mou toa road would cost some £400. He believed it would be best to do the claying first and metalling afterwards. Cr Jenks was in favour of claying and metalling the lot. After further discussion the report was altered and the resolution, was arried. -•* ' '
Proposed by the Mayor* seconded by Cr Jenks, That Cr Austin be appointed a member of the Works j Committee. Carried. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Hamer, "pro jot ma, That this ! Council sell the right of grazing the public roads in the daytime for a period of 12 months by tender, or by public auction. Cr Austin said there Were nearly always 30 or 40 bead of horses and cattle grazing on the road. There was good grazing and it should be made an asset; of. No later than this morning a ratepayer had said he would give £25 a year for the use of the Norbiton ro-ad for 12 months The motion was lost. Proposed by Cr Hamer, seconded by Cr Bradoock, That the report of the Library Committee be adop.ed. Carried. Proposed by Cr West wood, se conded by Cr "Austin, That permission be granted to the Primitive Methodist Sunday School Committee forthe use of the "Recreation Reserve on the 9th of November for their annual school picnic, also that permission be granted to make a charge at the gato. Carried. Proposed by Cr Hamer, seconded by Cr West wood, That the ranging be suspended between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. until the 31st January, 1895. — Carried.
