Public Works Statement.
The above statement was laid on the table of the House on Thursday night by the Hon. R. Seddon. The following is the summary of the Statement : — The Public Works Statement, shows that the gross total waya and means available for public works this year will be £1,147,616, and that the gross total oppropriatioas proposed amount to £940,163, leaving an unappropriated balance of £207,458, including £100,000 each on the Lands Improvement and Native Lands Purchase Accounts. The amount asked for under Part I. of the Public Works Fund is £564,960, or £43,880 less than was appropiated last year. The total increase in the appropriations under all heads will be £229,703. The appropiations for railways show a decrease on last year's votes. There is an increase on the vote for additions to open new lines, for which £40,000 is asked, as against £18,978 last year. The Eofcorua Railway is to be completed, and votes are proposed for the North Island Trunk Railway, the Otago Central line, the EketahunaWoodville line and others throughout the Colony. An increased expenditure of £16,---961 is proposed for main roads. There are votes for main roads, for . miscellaneous roads, for roads to give , access to the North Island Trunk Railway, for roads and tracks to open [ up Crown lands and for roads on . | goldfields. ' Among other new votes are :—Coi operative works for unemployed, £5000 ; improved form,, settlements, i £20,000 ; advances to co-operative I [ workmen, £500.
