Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, OCT. 9, 1894. Push on Work.
♦ We trust the action of the Manawatu County Council in Commencing work on the Moutoa road will wake our Borough Council up to take steps to complete their portion of the same road. It would not say much for the Borough if it had to be told to all passengers by the mail coach, when they arrived at a very bad piece of the road, "Oh, this is the part in the Borough of Foxton." Of course the County went the wisest way about their work by obtaining a loan sufficient to do the work properly, but our City Fathers have too much consideration for the "unborn millions " to saddle their shoulders with any portion of the liability, and thus prefer to pay all costs directly out of the pockets of the present taxpayers. It is a peculiar way of opening up new country and its only beauty is its old fashion. The Borough must make the road, and adherring to this peculiar financing, there is more trouble.. in finding the funds, but eyen in this cautious manner we believe funds could be found, and for the benefit of the town and district should be found. We have urged, time afcer time, the completion of this road, and have been met with the reply, " What is the use if the I
Cotihty does not make their part ?" •the County has started and unless the Borovtg-h is sharp, the County will have their miles of road done before the Borough has their threequarters of a mile. done. THe work should be surveyed and let at once, and the Mayor should sen to it before his term of office is up. We hope the candidate? for the office of Councillors will interest themselves in this question-, and that perfect unanimity will be shown in the completion of this main trunk line at an early date.
