The strong southerly wind blowing across the ground tended to make things a little unpleasant, and prevented a larger number from witnessing the sports, elill they can be said to h4ye passed off mdst satisfactorily, when the short time id which they tyere inaugurate!! is taken 1 into consideratioti. The feommltt^ and iudges had very little work to do, and the full programme of events was completed in very good time. The first race of 100 yards was rather disappointing, as with such a large field of 18 starters, the scratch men and others were blocked from getting through, thus giving those receiving handicaps every chance of winning. V. Shadbolt won four of the principal events, and also secured four seconds, thus winning the Messrs Loveday's prize for the most points scored. The boy's races brought out big fields, no : less than 27 starting for the first event of 100 yard?, for boys under 14, and 2G for thoie under 10. The girl's races Were equally well contested and much interest was taken in them. The 440 yards Handicap race was won by O. Gardner, and was a popular win, and also F. E. Young's in the Championship Race of 100 yards. Subjoined are the results : 1. Handicap Back, of 100 yards. First prize, Messrs McMillan, lthodes & Co.'a trophy; second, ss. To start .it 1 o'clock sharp. - F. Shadbolt .. 1 P. Robertson . . 2 Both the.™ men bad a start, the winner 9 yards, and the other 7 yards. Shadbolt had still another advantage in getting away well, and won by a yard. The time was alow, on account of the wind. 2. HioS Jump,— First prize, 10s ; second, Rh. V This was a gift to F. Shadbolt, who jumped clean and well, F. Young taking second place. Tho heigh th was not taken. 8. Handicap Boys' Bace, of 100 yardsFor boys under 14 years of age. First prize, ss ; second, 2s 6d. Entrance free on the ground. A. Fowler ... 1 A. Thompson . . 2 P. Eastern ... 3 This race brought out a crowd of young. Bters, 27 <all told, and was a pretty race. The handfeapper had no easy task in keep* ing them on their different marks, and an was made to the first boy receiving the prize for this fanlt. 4. Handicap Bace, of 220 yards. OiKii'B Handicap Back, of 100 yards. For girls under 14 years of age. First prize, a pair of vases ; second, a skipping rope. Entrance free on the ground. Twenty started for this race, and Edith Cole . came in first, and Edith Perreau second. 0. Champion Bace, of 100 yards. Open to all comers. First prize, £1. Seven started, but F. Young proved too fleet of foot for the others, and beat G. Lloyd by a yard. 7. Hurdle Bace, of 150 yards. First prize— Mr T. Westwood's— a tea set or an accoideon ; second, oh. F. Shadbolt 1 • P. Bobertßon 2 Seven started, and resulted as above, after a good race. 8. Hop, Step and Jump— First prize, 10s ; second, 29 6d. Only two competitors were left in this event, Moies a native, beating F. Shadbolt by two inohes. An extra girl's race was run off for a prize presented by Messrs J. Symons and H. Coley, and resulted as follows :— May Trask 1, Myra Webb 2. 9. Handicap Boys' Bace, of 100 yards. For boys under 10 yearß of age. First prize, a bat ; second, a ball. En.trance free on the ground. W. Stephens won this race, with J. Coley ■econd, beating 24 other competitors. 10. Handicap Bace, of 4^o yards. First prize, £1 ; second, ss. O. Gardner, F. B. Young and F. ShatN * bolt were the only starters, and Gardner in the last round showed his superiority, and passed Shadbolt 40 yards from home, and won comfortably. The High Jnmp for boys was won by E. Ingram, and B. Bell second. 11. HmiDiiE Bace, of 200 yards. First prize, a clock value 255 ; second, ss. P,. Robertson came in an easy winner in this race, with F. Shadbolt second, andL. Cole third. Only two others started. 13.- Handicap Half-mile Back, of £1 ; .second, 10s; third, as. This was won by W. Cameron, and again F. Shadbolt was placed second, and G. Chuck secured third position Two others f itarted. A very satisfactory afternoon's sport was concluded, and the secretary and other officials are to be complimented on the way the gathering was carried out.
