Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, OCT. 2, 1894. The Candidates.
» The Burgesses are to.be congratulated on the interest shown at the nomination of Councillors for the Borough of Foxton. Five candidates have come forward for the three vacancies, thus it is evident therefore that two must be disap pointed. We hope .the Burgesses will not promise their votes too hastily, but wait until they learn the views these gentlemen entertain upon public questions. Two of the candidates only are old Councillors, and the Burgesses would not do amiss to look up what their services have been in the past, and, if to their liking re turn them, or if objectionable, leav3 them out. The new men should let the public know why they seek to oust the men who have done the public some servioe, or at least who believe they have. We are not prepared at present to review the claims of the candidates for support until we- learn what, it is they urge,, but we are sure there is room for improvement in the management of the Borough, but it needs united action of members, which unity has not been shown in the past so strong as we should have desired it to be. The Act gives a longer time between the nomination and the poll, than usual,
and therefore we hope the candidates will make use of this by declaring their views so that the Burgesses may decide on their fitness from public instead of personal grounds.
