A Udy's Letter.
— ♦ ■. -■ : Wellington, Sept. 27th, 1894. The reception given by the Countess of Glasgow at Government House on Monday nighfc was very largely attended and was a great success. It was given by the Countess in order that she might welcome all frieflds at Government House again after her long absence in England _^-aiid everyone appeared highly delighted to see her again. Lord and Lady Glasgow received together in the drawing room, the latter wearing an extremely handsome white satin gown, trained, with sleeves of black spangled gauze and huge sprays of Forget-me-nots in both bodice and r Bkirfc. The rooms were most beautifully decorated with all the flowers in season, combined with greenery and one end of the drawing-room was completely covered with greenery of every kind artistically arranged with drapery and fairy lamps. The cou« servafcory was open all the evening and was also beautifully decorated and " lit with coloured Chinese lanterns. Light refreshments were served in the diningroom and in one of the drawingroonis, King's band was playing at intervals so that altogether the gathering, which must have included about 2000 guests, was a very pleasant affair. There were a number of beautiful gowns, so that I must mention a few. Lady Buckley was handsomely drepsedin groy and white brocade, trained and trimmed with passenientirie, Lady Agusfca Boyle wore pink satin and lace ; Lady Alice Boyle, cream gauze ; Lady Hector, grey silk and lace ; Mrs Johnston Stewart, a pretty white moire gown with lace epaulettes ; Miss Amy Jervois, a beautiful brown satin train over a petticoat of pale blue silk and white lace ; Mrs J. G. Ward, white-^j^^ Mrs Grace, black velvet ; MrsJ^ Phazazyn, a beautiful white and silver brocade trimmed with green satin ; Miss H. Williams, rich white brocade and. there were also present the Premier and Miss Seddon, Sir W. and Miss Buller, Miss Thurston, Sir J. Hector, Hon. J. G. Ward, Hon W, P. Reeves, Mr and Mrs o'Ror.ke, Sir M. O'Rorke, J)r and Mrs Newman, the Rev. T. and Mrs Sprofcfc, Mr and Mrs Parfitt, the Misses Brandon, Col. Pox, Mr Ed. and Miss Pearoe and many others. ■ Mrs T. C. "Williams is to give a small dance to-night and Lady Glasgow is to give one to-morrow night as a farewell to Capt. and Mrs Stewart and on Monday next Mrs G. Miss Buller received in a pretty cream gown and Miss Mills, of Dunedin, who is staying with heu, wore yellow 9ilk and lace."
