Wednesday, September 18. The Sp&aker took the chair at B.Bo' p.m; The following Bills were M2 0 first time : — Harbour and Education Reserves BUI, Mining Districts Laud Occupation Bill and the Midland .Railway Contract Act Amendment Bill. The New. Zealand Company's Land Claimants. Act. Amendment Bill and the Westland and Kelson Coalfields Administration Act Amendment Bill .Were read a second time. The , Government Railways Act i Amendment -Bill was committed. Mr i?inkertbn moved to amend Clause #', so that the railwaysi ihstead of being controlled by Com-, missioners, should revert to the Crown, the Government to have full contiol. After a short discussion, Mr Pinkerton's amendment as far as sub-section 2, but containing the principle oi complete State control, was then proposed to be inserted in placß of clause 3, and was carried by 86 votes to 27. Many other amendments to the Bill to make it in accord with the amendment abolishing the Railway Commissioners were agreed to. The Bill was reported from committee. The Ngaere and other Blocks Native Claims Adjustment Bill was read a third time and passed. The Criminal Code Act Amendment Bill, raising the age of consent to 16 years, was read a second time. The amendment made by the Legislative Council iv the Oaths Act Amendment Bill was agreed to. The-- Premier moved the second reading of the School Attendance Bill, making more stringent provision for the compulsory attendance of children at school. After debate the second reading was agreed to, , The House adjourned at 12.25 a.m. Thursday, September, 13. The New Zealand Consols Bill was read a first time. | The New Zealand Company's I Land Claimants Act 1892 Amend' |ment Bill and the Westland and Nelson Coalfields Administration Act Amendment Bill were passed. The Government Railways Bill was recommitted and after alterations was reported. The Hastings Borough Loau Validation and Empowering Bill read a second time. The Premier moved the second reading of the Licensing Bill which was carried on the voices. The Mining Companies Bill, and the Bankruptcy Bill were read a second time. The Criminal Code Bill was committed and after discussion a new clause to the effect that Louis Chemis should have the right to apply to the Court of Criminal Appeal for a new trial was agreed to. . The Bill was reported from committee and the House adjourned at 1.40 a.m.
