The Daily Chronicle 1 * Yokohama correspondent states that a report is enrrent there that seven Chinese CKuiaers were sunk in the engagement off W eihaiwai. •„•■'•'/ There are now 50,000 Japanese troopß hi dorea,' and it is gravely proposed to march to the conquest : of Manchuria. It is reported that China will raise a loan of £10,000,000 in sterling. The Governor of Formosa is offering rewards for Japanese heads. It is reported that Russia, France and Japan have agreed to share the benefits in the event of the defeat of the Chinese.
A treaty has been concluded placing British subjects in Japan under Japanese rule after five years. At present they are subject to tbe jurisdiction of the Consular Courts only. The Bothschilds are floating the Chinese loan.
The Chinese loan is only £1,500,---000. The interest is 5 per cent., and two-thirds of the money will be taken in silver.
The Governor of Formosa has offered a reward of £1500 for the sinking of Japanese warships' The Times' Yokohama correspondent declares that capitalists have guaranteed a sum of £16,000,---000 for war purposes. The Yosmche Zeilimg, a Berlin paper, .considers that lending money to China is a crime against the civilised world. The Japanese have laid torpedoes -at Nagasaki, Tokio and Yokohama. No engagements have taken place between the Chinese and Japanese fleets, as both are playing the game of " hide and seek."
At the request of Admiral Freemantle, of the British fleet, Japan has agreed not to renew the attack on Wachwaiwai or bombard Chefoo without 48 hours' notice.
Japan has authorised a loan of 50,000,000 dollars.
Owing to the Chinese firing and killing medical officers and causing explosions in the field hospitals, the Japanese wil} not admit adherents of the Red Cross into Corea.
