Tuesday, July 31. The Speaker took the chair at 2.30 p.m. Further leave of absence for one month was granted to Sir George Grey. Three days' leave was given to Mr McGuire. The following Bills were read a first time : — Masters and Appren tices Bill No. 2 ; Native? Lands Administration Bill ; Patea Foreshore Vesting Bill. The debate on the second reading of the Lands for Settlement Bill was resumed. After a whole day's debate the Minister of Lands replied during which he stated he was anxious to have the Bill read a second time before the financial debate ; otherwise it would not have beon seen again for three weeks, and after that it would have had to go to a committee, and the end of the session would have come, when it would be too late for the Government to call members to the Upper House to support the Bill. Yes, went on the Minister, he was determined to pass the Bill, and if it did not become

law this session the country would know all about it. If members voted against this Bill they might have to face their constituents. The Minister maintained that the lease in perpetuity was batter than the freehold. When the question was put Mr O'Rsgan called for a division The second reading was carried by 50 votes to 5. - The House adjourned at 11.55 p.ra . -1
