M. Zola's Last Work "Indexed."
Emile Zola has been asked his opinion on the report of his new work " Lourdes " having been " indexed" by the Congregations of Rites, or in other words, placed in the category of forbidden fruit for good catholics. He is surprised at the Roman college having become already acquainted with the book, and can only suppose that it is through its being so largely read in Italy, where it is appearing serially in the column? ot an influential daily paper. Ue adds : " This is the first time I have boeu so honoured, and I am all the more surprised inasmuch as " Lourdes " is not an attack against religion, it is a human explanation of facts which have happened at Lourdes. And besides, it is possible to be a very good Catholic and not admit the miracles of Lourdes." M. Zola observes that amongst other Catholic writers, prescribed by the Rites Commission, and in whose company he will be, is M. Henry Lasserre, the author of a former very widely circulated work on Lourdes.
