One view of the origin of tin Chicago Troubles.
During the course of a conversation with Dr Talmage, to the reporter of Truth, he gave some information with regard to the trouble in Chicago, which is interesting. " The reason of the outbreak in Chicago," said Dr Talmage, "is due to two causes, both of which spring from the recent World's Fair. When the World's Fair was first projected large numbers of artisans and labourers collected in Chicago, expecting to be employed. Many of them were so, but not all. Now the World's Fair is over, all are out of employment, hence the trouble. But like elsewhere in my country, it is not the bonafide working men who burn cars and ttar up railways. It is the Anarchists, spurred on by agitators who live by these troubles. They are the people who are fermenting and keeping alive the strike. At the same time there is no doubt that it is a very serious and melancholy state of things when 60,000 men are out of employment and in a great many cases starving."
